A Descriptive Study of Farmers and Ranchers Entering South Dakota Nursing Homes

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

The purpose of the study was to generate descriptive data on the farmer and rancher population in South Dakota that entered a nursing home during 1990-1995. Data collection included the use of the South Dakota Minimum Data Set Plus nursing home resident assessment and care screening tool. The sample consisted of 1.446 farmers and 157 ranchers. Descriptive analysis was completed on the sample relating to the objectives of the study. Findings suggest further study is needed to examine the influences of gender, availability of support services, economic factors, functional status, hearing patterns, disease states, and other factors related to the cultural specificity of farmers and ranchers. Leininger's Sunrise Model to Depict Theory of Cultural Care Diversity and Universality was used as the theoretical framework for the study of the farmer and rancher sample. Some findings indicate that the sample was mostly male, married, demonstrated less contractures. and were admitted from an acute care hospital. The mental health status was high and most of the subjects did not receive any antipsychotics. antianxiety/hypnotics, or antidepressants.
