A Descriptive Study of Employer Demand for Nursing Personnel in South Dakota

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

The purpose of this study was to describe the current and projected need for nurses in South Dakota as perceived by employers of nurses. This study was performed in conjunction with the South Dakota Board of Nursing as part of the South Dakota Consortium of the Colleagues in Caring Project to prepare for future nursing workforce development. A two page survey was sent to 100 percent of employers of nurses in South Dakota with a response rate of 59.19 percent. The survey gathered data on current number of clients served by these organizations and whether the organization predicted an increase, decrease, in clients in 1999 and 2001. The questionnaire also gathered data on number of current registered nurses and position vacancies and predictions of numbers and educational level of RNs for 1999 and 2001. Descriptive and inferential statistics were performed on the data.
The study findings indicated that employers reported significantly more clients will be served in 1999 and 2001. Employers reported intent to employ 3.9 percent more registered nurses in 2001. By 2001, employers intend to employ significantly less Associate degree and Diploma nurses and more Baccalaureate nurses.
Future demand for the number and educational level of registered nurses continues to change. Employers in South Dakota are projecting a need for more registered nurses and more RNs who are educated at a Baccalaureate, Masters or Doctoral level.
