Competencies Required to Function in the Role of Nursing Staff Development Coordinator

<p>This descriptive study investigated the minimum educational requirements, role functions and competencies required to function as a nursing staff development coordinator as reported by the supervisor of nursing staff development coordinators In hospitals In the upper midwest. A questionnaire was used to collect data. One hundred and one questionnaires were mailed and 58 were returned. Fifty-three questionnaires were utilized in the study analysis.<br> The objectives of this study were:<br> 1. To review the literature for nursing staff development coordinator competencies.<br> 2. To determine the level of education required for the nursing staff development coordinator to perform each competency expected in the position responsibilities.<br> 3. To identify roles in which the nursing staff development coordinator must function to fulfill the position responsibilities.<br> 4. To identify competencies needed by the nursing staff development coordinator to perform In the staff development role.<br> 5. To predict competencies which may be needed by the nursing staff development coordinator In the ensuing five years.<br> The respondents in this study Indicated a baccalaureate In nursing as the minimum educational requirement for 30 of 37 competencies. Of the 15 roles studied, 13 were Indicated by 50% or more of the respondents as being expected of the nursing staff development coordinator. The respondents Identified 34 of 37 competencies critical today to functioning In the nursing staff development role. All 37 of the competencies evaluated were Identified as critical today and/or within five years by 79% or more of the respondents. Eight competencies were Identified by 25% or more of the respondents as not essential today but essential In 5 years.</p>
