The Effect of Back Massage on Anxiety Level Among Elderly Residents in a Long-term Care Facility

<p>The study was done to determine if back massage was related to the level of anxiety among residents in a long-term care facility. It attempted to determine if differences in selected demographic characteristics were related to level of anxiety after back massage and attempted to determine if general anxiety (Trait) was related to immediate (State) anxiety after back massage. A single group pre-test-post test design was used. Subjects included 27 nursing home residents who were 65 years of age or older. The State-Trait Anxiety Inventory was used to measure anxiety. The State, then Trait, were administered. Then a 5 minute back massage was given. The State was once again administered following massage. The demographic characteristics were obtained through a review of the subjects' charts. Results varied significantly with anxiety. There were no relationships between demographic characteristics and Trait Anxiety on anxiety after back massage. There was a significant difference between the State anxiety scores before back massage and after back massage.<br /> I give my permission to the College of Nursing, South Dakota State University, to publish this abstract in a collection of abstracts from Master's projects and theses.</p>
