Hospital Based Postpartum Care Programs

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

Innovative nurses are developing ways to provide care to childbearing families. One goal has been to provide support and education after discharge from the hospital. Numerous methods have been found to deliver this. There is little research available regarding the success of such programs in meeting childbearing families' needs, especially those discharged before 48 hours. This will attempt to examine through survey inquiry, what programs hospitals have developed to provide care to postpartum families.
Health care professionals need to know what care is currently available to the postpartum population. Professionals also need to know how effectively the existing programs are meeting the needs of postpartum families. This study will start to answer these question. The study will also identify areas where more research is needed. Tender's Health Promotion model provides the theoretical framework for the study.
The study sample included the 380 hospitals in the United States that deliver 1000 to 1500 infants per year as reported in the American Hospital Association's Reference Guidebook. This study used descriptive/correlational survey approach. The survey method was chosen to allow are relatively large number of subjects and large geographic area to respond while keeping the study economically feasible for the data obtained. The disadvantage of this method is that the depth of information obtained is at the discretion of the subject. Also, there is no control over the number of surveys returned.
