Violence : An Attempt at Control

<p>At age 15, Joyce Carol Oates received her first rejection by a New York publisher who said that her work was just too depressing for other children. Undaunted, Oates continued to write and entered a program of literature at Syracuse University. After graduating as valedictorian of her undergraduate class, she completed her master's degree at the University of Wisconsin in 1961. Then, she entered a Ph. D. program at Rice University in Houston. She left this study in 1967 to move to Detroit with her husband, Raymond. There she taught English. Fletcher Knebel, a friend of Oates, describes Oates as a person who spends all "waking hours immersed in letters, writing, teaching, criticizing and reading" (1 82). [Introduction: Page 1]</p>
