SUSTAINABILITY IN HOUSING: COMPARATIVE STUDY ON STANDARD DWELLINGS AND CONSUMPTION OF DOMESTIC SPACES IN SINGAPORE AND JAKARTA
Abstract
dc:description.abstractBy looking at space as a finite resource, the dissertation seeks to study the sustainability of the current level of space consumption in Jakarta and Singapore – two cities at different economic stage of development, with problems of high population density. With global population projected to further increase to approximately around 10.6 billion in 2050 within the finite surface area of the Earth, space consumption in relation to population density is going to be a major issue in the future. As housing is one of the most basic physiological needs of human beings, domestic space consumption has to be moderated to a sustainable level and manner in view of rising population density. In tackling the rising population density, Singapore has chosen to shrink the housing unit sizes, while Jakarta has been unsuccessful in transitioning to high-rise housing. Through comparison of the standard dwellings and the minimum standard dwellings in Singapore and Jakarta, the study investigates the physical efficiency level of domestic space and its consumption, to better understand the merits and issues of the current domestic space, consumption pattern and standards of dwelling in the two contexts. Obviously, apartments in Singapore cannot continue to shrink, and Jakarta cannot keep building unoccupied high-rise apartments. A more sustainable idea of domestic space is therefore to be constructed by taking only the merits of both contexts.
