Thin and Etched Section Analysis of a Limestone in the White River Formation
Abstract
dc:description.abstract<p>A sample from the Oligocene White River formation was taken from the top of Sentinel Butte. Thin sections and etched sections were prepared from this sample and studied microscopically. The sample was found to be a dense, highly siliceous limestone which exhibits very thin, rippled laminations, ranging from one tenth to one half millimeter in thickness. Several isolated, subangular quartz grains were observed in each of the sections studied. A considerable number of fossil outlines are present which appear to be fresh water ostracods. The porosity and permeability of the sample were found to be relatively poor.</p>
