Abstract
dc:description.abstract<p>The poems in this collection represent an exploration of different towns and counties in Illinois. With a strong sense of place, the narrative and lyric poems in The Highlands rely on a rotating cast of narrators based on the author's family to explore disordered relationships, landownership, inheritance, and immobility.</p> <p>The collection is divided into two parts, The Landowner’s Daughter and Dear Katharine. The poems in the first section have a stronger connection to the land, while the poems in the second half grapple with what it means to be disconnected from generational landownership.</p>
