DNP project : improving childhood wellness knowledge in a mid-Michigan community

Abstract

dc:description

Childhood obesity is a growing public health concern, affecting approximately one in five children in the United States and over 32% of children in Michigan, with significant physical, psychological, and financial consequences, particularly among lower-income populations. Despite successful school-based interventions, gaps remain in accessible, community-based prevention efforts. The purpose of this Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project was to implement and evaluate a childhood wellness program in a public library setting to improve knowledge of nutrition, physical activity, and mental wellness among children ages 8-11 and their families. Using a program evaluation design guided by the RE-AIM framework, the intervention consisted of two one-hour sessions based on the evidence-based "Jump Into Foods and Fitness" curriculum. This curriculum was developed by the Michigan State University Extension and sessions incorporated play-based, hands-on learning strategies to enhance engagement and retention. Data was collected using pre- and post-intervention "Sound Off Surveys" and analyzed using descriptive statistics to assess changes in knowledge, behaviors, and attitudes. Results demonstrated an overall 16% increase in childhood wellness knowledge, with notable improvements in hand hygiene practices and understanding the importance of stretching and physical activity. No decrease in knowledge was observed; however, the small sample size (n=3) limited the generalizability of findings. These results support that brief, community-based, interactive educational interventions can effectively improve childhood wellness knowledge. Expanding such programs in accessible community settings, including libraries and schools, and increasing duration and participant size may enhance outcomes and contribute to long-term prevention of childhood obesity.
