Evaluating Satellite Image Classification For Bottomland Surveys in Ozark National Scenic Riverways

The National Park Service has used aerial photographs in a preliminary survey of landcover in Ozark National Scenic Riverways. This thesis evaluated the feasibility of using satellite images in further surveys of the park. Aerial photographs were digitized to allow computerized comparison with satellite images. Landcover regions were drawn using the aerial photographs, topographic maps and on-site experience. The satellite images were computer-classified into landcover classes. The satellite-image classification was compared with the aerial-photograph landcover regions. Statistical analysis shows the classified satellite image is not sufficiently accurate in area measurements or in landcover designations for resource management use. It is recommended that future National Park Service landcover surveys utilize aerial photographs.
