Turnkey

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

This thesis contains approximately one-third (four chapters) of Turnkey, a mainstream novel set in the present day about a correctional officer who tries to balance his life working in prisons with his home life. The protagonist, Teague, struggles to maintain his humanity while engulfed in a very inhumane and dehumanizing environment. He searches for answers in similar ways to Sartre's "Self-taught man" and Roquentin in Nausea. Teague's existentialism creates problems as he attempts to keep his two worlds from colliding and tries to find some way to keep himself and his family from deterioration and destruction.
