Big Bluestem (Andropogon Gerardi) and Indiangrass (Sorghastrum Nutans) Establishment Using Minimum-Till Seeding Methods

Four methods of seeding a mixture of big bluestem (Andropogon gerardi Vitman, and indiangrass (Sorghastrum nutans (L.) Nash, were tested during 1980.These seeding methods included (1) hand broadcasting during the fall, (2) minimum-till during the fall, (3) minimum-till during the fall, (3) minimum-till during the spring, and (4) drilling during the spring into a clean-till (well prepared) seedbed. A Truax warm-season grass drill was used for seeding. Glyphosate [N-(phosphonomethyl) glycine] was applied during both the fall and sping on some plots to kill the existing vegetation. The clean-till seeding method produced more stems of big bluestem per square meter (square foot) than did other methods tested.
