Exploring the Application of Lean Processes Enhanced by Digital Archiving in Precision Subtractive Manufacturing

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

Subtractive precision manufacturing produces components for many industries: aerospace, astrospace, defense, biotech, medical device, and more. This paper discusses the effects of applying lean principles enhanced by digital archiving to subtractive precision manufacturing. An analysis of the subtractive manufacturing process and relevant subprocesses was conducted. Two opportunities for intervention, fixturing and cut plans, were identified. The introduction of lean, supported by a digital archive, at a representative company, led to significant efficiency gains. The paper concludes with discussing additional opportunities for future efficiency gains and/or research.
