A market feasibility analysis of the carbon capture utilization and storage landscape in China for foreign firms

China has made ambitious climate commitments in recent years, the latest being its goal to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060. This paper examines the carbon capture utilization and storage landscape in China, and attempts to uncover market opportunities for foreign firms with expertise in this area. Referencing market entry strategies taken by foreign firms in China’s wind and solar industry at the start of the 21st century, this paper looks at their past successes and their current operating environment two decades later. A section of this paper will discuss existing financing and legislative gaps in China’s CCUS landscape and potential policies which could drive large-scale commercialization. This paper will also provide recommendations on possible areas where foreign players can value-add should they decide to enter this industry.
