This thesis explores a new paradigm within the automobile industry, focusing on its implications for product development in the German car industry. The primary objective is to create a model for disruptive product innovations in the German automotive market, with attention to the context of older customers. Through a critical review of existing literature on the industry, disruptive innovation, and the interaction of elderly customers with advanced technology, a scientific gap is identified. This gap pertains to the challenges of integrating electrification and digitalization into vehicles traditionally dominated by hardware engineering, as managed by established car manufacturers. This research examines traditional methods and strategies in new product development within the automotive industry, considering the ongoing transitions. The aim is to develop a model for disruptive product innovations, enabling traditional OEMs to adapt their development strategies and maintain competitiveness in the evolving industry landscape. The development of the final model is carried out using a case study approach, which involves both document research and expert interviews. This methodology allows for an in-depth understanding and application of theoretical concepts in real-world scenarios. For assessing the findings and enhancing the validity of the model, qualitative content analysis is employed, following Mayring's approach. This method ensures systematic and insightful evaluation of the data collected from various sources. The development of a new product development model for disruptive innovation (NPED) provides a notable contribution to closing the identified research gap by providing a solid foundation for developing disruptive innovations within the new paradigm of the German automotive industry, considering the needs of older individuals. The industry of established OEMs is undergoing a transformation toward a new paradigm, characterized by digitalization and a higher frequency of disruptive innovations, rather than the incremental innovations of the past. Traditional manufacturers must find ways to adapt their structures to thrive within this new paradigm. The NPED model offers an approach for traditional OEMs to successfully navigate and compete in this evolving landscape.
