A feasibility study of protected cropping of tomatoes in Fiji: In partial fulfilment of the requirements for the Diploma in Horticultural Management

Abstract

dc:description

Tomatoes cannot be successfully grown in open ground in various parts of Fiji between November and April mainly due to the hot, wet weather conditions. In the suitable areas, more economical crops such as sugarcane use the land to the best advantage. About 300 tonnes ($290,000.00) of tomatoes are imported annually from Tonga and New Zealand. Growing tomatoes under protected cover with controlled environment is suggested as an alternative method of maintaining the production during this period. A modified tunnel house structure with plastic roof cover on a metal frame is proposed for Fiji conditions. The key factors in the production of tomatoes under protected covers will be the selection of suitable cultivars, efficient soil sterilisation, pest and disease control and maintenance of correct temperature and humidity by careful ventilation Protected cropping will allow for maintenance of correct soil moisture and for bird protection.
