The possible upgrading of the Centennial Hall : A dissertation submitted as partial completion of the Diploma in Parks and Recreation (Community Recreation Option)

In June of 1983, a Sub-committee of the Invercargill City Council was formed to look at the possibility of upgrading the Centennial Hall. As a member of the City Council staff I was requested to report on suitable types of flooring, and potential user groups if the Hall was upgraded. In this dissertation I have attempted to fulfill those requests. The Centennial Hall is a centrally located building be­longing to the City Council. Although it is on land that belongs to the Agricultural and Pastoral Association the City Council has full responsibility for the running of the Hall. The Agricultural and Pastoral Association use the Hall twice yearly for their shows. The Centennial Hall is 160 feet by 100 feet and has an uneven asphalt floor. The sides of the building are brick for the first 6 feet then a mixture of pinex and louvre windows. Much of the glass in the windows is cracked and within the Hall there is a general feeling of disrepair and disuse. During the time that I was compiling this dissertation it has become apparent that there is a necessity for an indoor community sports facility in Invercargill. The Centennial Hall has the potential to become such a facility, however , it can only be a good working facility if the Council makes a firm committment to the development of a multipurpose community facility. The limiting or enabling factor will be the extent to which the Council supports such a proposal. Information on types of surfaces has mainly been from distributors and, where possible, secretary/managers who are familiar with the qualities of the various floorings.
