The influence of an experimentally transient increase in sensory awareness (tactical) upon self-disclosure, momentary anxiety and ratings of social desirability
Abstract
dc:description.abstractThis study proposes to investigate the influence of an experimentally induced condition of transiently heightened sensory-awareness (the tactile sense) upon three psycho-logical variables; namely, self-disclosure, momentary anxiety and social desirability. Three conditions will be used: (1) an experimental situation focusing upon direct sensory awareness; (2) an experimental situation focusing upon cognitive awareness of sensory experience; and, (3) a control situation in which there is no special focus upon sensory awareness. The purpose of the study is twofold: first, to provide experimental evidence for the postulated relation between increased sensory awareness and psychological functioning; and second, to relate the eventual results of the sensory awareness procedure to findings in the area of somatopsychology. It is hoped, thereby, to arrive at a better understanding of the role of the soma in mental health.
