Grazyna Bacewicz 10 Etudes for Piano: A Technical Guide

AbstractEtudes have always held a very important position in the world of piano. Since 1800, many composers have emerged to compose series of piano etudes for teaching purposes. For example, Scarlatti and C.P.E Bach wrote sonatas that required a strong technical ability similar to etudes. In the 19th century, etudes gained more popularity among piano enthusiasts, who practiced them to focus on obtaning piano techniques and overcoming technical obstacles for musical performance. During the same period, several concert etudes emerged to satisfy the audience's need for musicality and a colorful technical auditory experience. Gradually in the 20th century, society began to accept the works of female composers, which had long been dominated by male composers. This shift has transformed the field of music creation.In my dissertation, I aim to introduce Grazyna Bacewicz's ten piano etudes, provide effective guidance for teachers, students, and pianists who wish to learn this set of works, and offer more diversified choices for concert music selection. Additionally, I will conduct a comparative study of Bacewicz's works and Chopin's etudes.
