EFFECT OF GROUP MUSIC THERAPY ON STUDENT MUSIC THERAPISTS' ANXIETY, MOOD, JOB ENGAGEMENT AND SELF-EFFICACY
Abstract
dc:description.abstractThe purpose of this study was to examine the effects of two group music therapy interventions on student music therapists' anxiety, mood, job engagement, and perceived self-efficacy. This study examined two conditions: (1) group music and imagery; and (2) group drumming. The group music and imagery condition was based on Summer's (2002) group Music and Imagery (MI) therapy, a form of modified group Guided Imagery and Music (GIM) to fit the structure and support needed in a group setting. The group drumming (GD) condition was based on HealthRhythms, a form of active music-making using group drumming to enhance general and occupational wellness (Bittman, et al., 2003; Bittman, et al., 2004; Bittman, et al., 2005). Twenty students majoring in music therapy at two universities in the metropolitan area of Seoul, South Korea participated in the study. Participants were randomly assigned to one of the two music therapy conditions with two groups of nine to eleven participants for each condition with a total of approximately 20 participants. The investigator compared participants' pre- to posttest job engagement (UWES), trait anxiety (STAI), mood states (POMS and PANAS), and perceived self -efficacy (GSE) within conditions and between both conditions. Results from the study revealed statistically significant difference in four out of seven measures for the MI group and one out of seven measures for the GD group. An Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) indicated that the MI group displayed in more statistically significant improvement in the areas of job engagement and trait anxiety, compared to the GD group.
