Prediction of multicomponent ion exchange a ternary system

Often in nitrate contaminated water, sulfate is the primary anion which affects the ionexchange system between nitrate and chloride anions. The generally accepted selectivity sequence [4, 11,14] for commercially available strong-base anion exchangers in dilute aqueous solution is sulfate > nitrate > chloride. The purpose of this study was to compare two fundamental concepts of ion-exchange systems: selectivity coefficients and separation factors as parameters for use in predicting the breakthrough of the ions of interest in a ternary system: sulfate, nitrate and chloride.
