Συχνότητα μόλυνσης με κυτταρομεγαλοϊό, yersinia enterocolitica και toxoplasma gondii, ασθενών με μεσογειακή αναιμία και οικείων τους
Abstract
dc:descriptionIn this study we detected the infection rate by Cytomegalovirus, Toxoplasma Gondii and Yersinia Enterocolitica in patients with β-thalassemia and their household contacts. We studied a total of 503 individuals that is 123 β-thalassemic patients, 146 of their household contacts and 234 healthy control subjects of the same age. Antibodies to CMV (cytomegalovirus) and Toxoplasma were detected using enzyme immunoassays (EIAS), whereas for the detection of antibodies to Yersinia we used the indirect hemaglutination technique. Our findings demonstrated that: 81,3% of the thalassemic patients were seropositive to CMV, whereas the seropositivity rate in the control subjects was 59,3% (p<0,001). Also 97,3% of the household contacts were positive for antibodies against CMV, whereas only 66,4% of the control subjects were positive (p<0,001). These findings indicate that not only thalassemic patients are at increased risk for becoming infected with the CMV, but also their household contacts are at a similar risk. Of the patients studied 11,4% were positive for antibodies to Toxoplasma, whereas 25,2% were antibody positive in the control subjects (p<0,01). On the other hand, as expected, a similar rate of seropositivity to Toxoplasma was identified both in the household contacts and the control subjects (39%). Finally, similar rate of positive antibodies to Yersinia were found in the thalassemic patients (1,6%) and their control subjects (0,8%), as well as in the household contacts (0,7%) and their control subjects (0,7%).
