Abstract
dc:descriptionThe study is about the precorneal tears film and the conjunctival epithelium. We study the influence of the age, sex, environmental factors and general diseases (connective tissues diseases, S. Sjogren) on the lacrimal function and the conjunctival epithelium. We examined five groups: 276 normal persons living in Ioannina, 57 normal persons living in Athens, 50 persons one with subjective symptoms of dry eye, 33 women with connective tissues diseases without secondary S. Sjogren and 92 persons with S. Sjogren. We examinated the lacrimal function with break-up time, Schirmer-1 test and Rose Bengal staining and the conjuctival epitheliums with impression cytology. The analysis of our results show: The lacrimal function is reduced by the age and this cause a squamus metaplasia of the conjuctival epithelium. Sex doesn’t influence to the lacrimal function and conjuctival epithelium. Environmental factors reduce the stability of the tear film. The subjective symptoms mean that the protection from the tear film it’s not enough for the eye. The patients with S. Sjogren suffer from dry eye with a squamus metaplasia of the conjuctival epithelium. The Rose Bengal staining is the most reliable examination for the lacrimal function. The impression cytology is a reliable and simple method.
