Abstract
dc:descriptionIn the present study the serum folic acid binding capacity in the blood and in the liquids of the peritoneal dialysis and hemodialysis were measured. Seventy-five patients in the last stage of chronic renal failure were studied. Twenty-five of them underwent peritoneal dialysis and fifty of them hemodialysis. The serum folic acid, the total saturated and unsaturated serum folic acid binding capacity and the percentage of saturation before and after the treatment were determined in all the above patients. The results in both cases have proved that there is a loss of folic acid and binders from the blood to the liquids. As a result a statistically important decrease of all the above rates after the treatment was observed. On the other hand, no statistically significant difference was found in comparing the results between the two different methods of treatment. Besides, a large loss of the saturated fraction was observed and this is probably due to either the smaller molecular weight and the larger affinity which the saturated binder might have, or to the transformation of is stereochemical structure.
