Abstract
dc:descriptionA MATHEMATICAL MODEL IS PRESENTED FOR THE DESCRIPTION OF FLOW AND SETTLING IN SETTLING TANKS. A LITERATURE SURVEY IS PRESENTED CONCERNING THE FACTORS THAT MAYAFFECT THE EFFICIENCY OF SETTLING TANKS. PRESENTATION OF MODEL EQUATIONS AND THE METHODOLOGY OF THEIR SOLUTION. THE K-Σ MODEL OF TURBULENCE HAS BEEN USED. ALL EXPERIMENTAL WORKS ARE DESCRIBED. CONCERNED WITH LDA MEASUREMENTS FLOW VISUALLIZATION AND FTC MEASUREMENTS EXPERIMENTS HAVE BEEN PERFORMED IN THE APPLIED HYDRAULICS LABORATORY OF THE NTU AND THE INSTITUTE OF HYDRAUMECHANICS IN THE UNIVERSITY OF KARLSRUHE (WEST GERMANY). USING THE EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS, THE MODEL HAS BEEN VERIFIED AND PROVED TO BE A USEFUL TOOL FOR THE DESIGN OF SETTLING TANKS.
