Abstract
dc:descriptionDental practice has been implicated in the transmission of hepatitis Β virus (HBV). We have attempted to study the influence of dental treatment in the spead of HBV infection among adult patients admitted consecutively at the Athens Hospital for Infectious Diseases. From September 1982 to September 1984 three hundred and thirty one {22%) of the 1,504 patients had a history of dental treatment during the six months prior to the acute illness. Of the 331 patients, 207 were treated by 200 dentists in the metropolitan area of Athens. The remaining were treated in other cities and the rural areas of Greece. One hundred and forty eight ( 7 4·% ) of these 200 dentists (group I) working in the metropolitan area of Athens as well as 165 dentists (group II) were studiedfor the presence of serologic markers of HBV infection. In addition, 527 patients who were admitted to other hospitals for non-liver diseases, were studied for the presence of a history of dental treatment during the six months prior to their admission to the hospital. Radioimmunoassays were used for the detection of serologic markers of HBV infection. The present study revealed: 1) A high prevalence of serologic markers of current or. past HBV infection (group I 35.1%, group II 29.1%) as well as a high prevalence of past history of apparent acute hepatitis Β (group I 7.4%, group II 11.5%) among dentists. These findings were correlated positively with the age and the duration of practice (p<0-0001). 2) History of dental treatment was found to be significantly more frequent in patients with acute viral hepatitis than in patients with non-liver diseases (22% VS 17.6, p<0.05).3) Transmission of the HRV from dentists carriers to patients and vice versa was not proved. 4) Inefficient sterilization could have been implicated in the transmission of HBV from patient to patient since eleven patients with hepatitis Β and three with hepatitis non-Α, non-B were treated by seven dentists.
