Hannah Arendt’s Precondition for Atrocity: A Philosophical Examination of the Final Solution in a Modern World

This thesis describes Hannah Arendt’s endeavor to address how the Holocaust could take place in a modern world. In her book, The Human Condition, Arendt describes how the modern break down of the public and private realms, the uniformity of men and lack of plurality have led to a society indulged in consumption. As a result, human beings have failed to display their personal stories to the world around them and have conformed to prevailing singular ideology in sheer ‘thoughtlessness.’ It is this type of society which has provided the basis for the Holocaust and similar atrocity in contemporary times.
