The Island of Last Hope + Time-play with purpose: minoritised stories in contemporary children's time-slip literature

This thesis consists of a children's novel, 'The Island of Last Hope', followed by a critical commentary, 'Time-play with purpose: minoritised stories in contemporary children's time-slip literature'. The commentary offers a new approach to ‘time-play’ fiction for children, demonstrating how exploring this area of scholarship as a practising writer can bring productive original insights to the discipline. It examines a group of recent children’s novels which use time-play to foreground minoritised stories. Key components include the playframe on which such novels are built, the ethical risks of connecting time-play with minoritised experience, and the affective possibilities of imagery. The commentary tracks a sense of purposeful play through these novels and suggests ways in which writers can engage in risk-aware play.<p></p>
