Leisure and Modernity in late 19th Century Shanghai

Abstract

Xiuxian, which rendered in English as entertainment culture, often refers to leisure culture in China. It played an integral role in the formation of Shanghai modernity from the mid nineteenth century. This thesis provides a study of how entertainment culture became an important part of signal associated with modernity of the city in late 19th century and how it reflected urban social and culture change.
