Abstract
dc:description.abstract
This thesis contains the novel, Farpointe, the second installment in a fantasy series titled The Ice Princess Chronicles. The protagonist is a young woman named Shaecia, princess of a land named Sapora, whose magical powers are fueled by her elemental connection to ice. The story begins with Shaecia at sea and dreading what is to come. She is still mourning the loss of her lover but soon discovers that she cannot afford to let her emotions get the better of her or, rather, that exposing her feelings allows someone else the advantage. Sheacia seals away her emotions and vows to make something of the life she has been dealt. With the help of an old sailor, Shaecia prepares for her new life in Farpointe, a land of cold and ice, very different from what she has known. One thing she does know is that if she going to survive this new place, she is going to require allies, but trusting people does not come easily. Once Shaecia arrives she meets the Royal Family and her intended, Prince Castorian. She sets her sights on him as the first obstacle to conquer and so begins her quest to find her place in this new world.

Farpointe an exploration of balance. Shaecia has learned to modulate her powers and her passions, and she's found an equilibrium between her grief and her hopes for the future. Ultimately, Farpointe suggests that we experience only a delicate counter-balance against the world's evil, including the evil within ourselves. Self-preservation is, at best, an uncertain dance.
