Abstract
dc:description.abstractBecause of its age, the saxophone has not been covered by those historic music eras before its birth. Based on its popularity, thousands of pieces have already been written for it. While the history of the saxophone is short, the stylistic freedom of modern music allows composers the opportunity to exploit the potential of the instrument in a wide range of styles. Because the repertoire is limited in modern compositions, saxophone performers nowadays are meeting the challenge of the variety of styles. Composers of today have absorbed many elements from the past and mixed them with new innovations to interpret and control those ideas becomes the goal of study. This concert will start with Karel Husa, and then introduce the music of Henri Tomasi, Piet Swerts, Francois Borne, Villa-Lobos and other compositional styles.
