International water law and post-Soviet cooperation: integrating management of the Dnieper river

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

The Dnieper (Dnipro, Dnepr), one of Europe's major rivers, is a transbounary river shared by Ukraine, Belarus and the Russian Federation. The Dnieper basin has experienced severe environmental degradation, and transboundary impacts, particularly from pollution, are of potential concern in the future management of the river. This thesis examines the international water law governing the Dnieper and puts forward recommendations for improving the legal regime comprising agreements between the basin countries as a foundation for future use and improvement of the waters.
