Dr. Suess in the Classroom: Building the Phonemic Awareness of Kindergarten Students
Abstract
dc:description.abstract<p>In my review of the literature, I explore phonological awareness, focusing on the rhyming skills of kindergarten students. The value of Dr. Seuss’ children’s literature, which is renown for rhyming, repetition and predictable structures, has not been accredited in reading curriculums or included in formal instruction when developing phonemic awareness. The purpose of this project is to examine the literature on teaching strategies and learning activities that best develop students phonemic awareness skills in order to develop a curriculum of learning activities using Dr. Seuss children s literature designed for supporting pre-readers and beginning readers. Included are eight teacher designed and teacher tested lesson plans that use Dr. Seuss to build phonemic and phonics skills of pre-readers and beginning readers.</p>
