Beyond Reading: The Extended Academic and Social Effects of Dyslexia

<p>As a fifth-grade classroom teacher, I observed a relationship between students’ reading levels and their overall academic performance. I also witnessed and reacted to students who were suffering from the social ramifications of their disabilities—being labeled as “retarded” and ridiculed for a situation over which they had no control. This meta-cognitive literature review covers learning disabilities and their array of effects on students’ development in the classroom both academically and socially.</p> <p>Volumes of information are synthesized into themes and pertinent findings. Common themes include the most prevalent symptoms of and most effective strategies for coping with dyslexia. Dyslexia s far-reaching effects stretch into all areas of curriculum and, in many cases, simultaneously impede social development.</p>
