The Impact of Grade-School Retention on Self Esteem and Decision-Making in Five Adult Lives

<p>The purpose of this study was to explore the experience of grade school retention as perceived in the lives of five adults, ages thirty years or older, with particular attention to its effects on self-esteem, social development, academic performance, non-compliant behavior and personal feelings about retention. Results indicated that retention had negative effects on self-esteem and social development. Participants had negative attitudes about the policy of retention. Findings on the effects of retention on academic performance and non-compliant behavior were mixed.</p>
