I n 2 0 0 7 , t h e N a t i o n a l H e a l t h S u r v e i l l a n c e A g e n c y ( A N V I S A ) i n s t i t u t e d t h e B o a r d Re s o l u t i o n 6 7 , w h i c h d e f i n e s t h e G o o d H a n d l i n g P r a c t i c e s f o r c o m p o u n d i n g p r e p a r a t i o n s f o r h u m a n u s e i n p h a r m a c i e s , s e e k i n g t o e s t a b l i s h e s s e n t i a l p a r a m e t e r s , s o t h e c o m p o u n d i n g p h a r m a c i e s c o u l d p r o d u c e w i t h q u a l i t y a s s u r a n c e . F o r t h e q u a l i t y c o n t r o l p h y s i c - c h e m i c a l a n d m i c r o b i o l o g i c a l t r i a l s a r e m a d e b y c o u n t i n g p a t h o g e n s a n d v i a b l e m i c r o o r g a n i s m s i n n o n - s t e r i l e p r o d u c t s . T h e h e r b a l c a p s u l e s f i t s i n t o t h e c a t e g o r y o f n o n - s t e r i l e , m o r e s p e c i f i c a l l y a s d r u g s o f n a t u r a l o r i g i n , a n d l i k e a l l h e r b a l m e d i c i n e , i s h a v i n g a g r o w t h i n i t s u s e b y t h e p o p u l a t i o n , d e m a n d i n g b e t t e r q u a l i t y c o n t r o l . T h e o b j e c t i v e o f t h i s s t u d y w a s t o e v a l u a t e t h e m i c r o b i o l o g i c a l q u a l i t y o f c a p s u l e s c o n t a i n i n g d r u g s o f n a t u r a l o r i g i n h a n d l e d i n c o m p o u n d i n g p h a r m a c i e s i n J o ã o P e s s o a - P B .
