T h i s p r o b l e m , i n B r a z i l , i s m o r e s e r i o u s t h a n a p p e a r s , s i n c e t h e p o l i c y r e q u i r e d f o r h e a l t h e d u c a t i o n i s s c a r c e . A m o n g t h e p a r a s i t i c , s t a n d s o u t s t r o n g y l o i d i a s i s . M o s t o f i t i s a s y m p t o m a t i c , b u t i n i m m u n o c o m p r o m i s e d p a t i e n t s , t h e c l i n i c a l p r e s e n t a t i o n m a y b e s o s e v e r e t h a t l e a d t o d e a t h . T h e r e f o r e , t h e a i m o f t h i s s t u d y w a s t o i n v e s t i g a t e S t r o g y l o i d e s s t e r c o r a l i s i n t h e m u n i c i p a l i t y o f R i a c h ã o P i t - P B w a t c h i n g t h e g r o u p s m o s t a f f e c t e d i n r e l a t i o n t o g e n d e r a n d a g e , a s w e l l a s f r e q u e n c y o f i n t e s t i n a l p a r a s i t e s . D a t a w e r e c o l l e c t e d f r o m t h e a r c h i v e s o f t h e s t o o l t e s t s r e c o r d e d i n t h e C l i n i c a l L a b o r a t o r y i n t h e c i t y . T h e s a m p l e s o f t h e r e s e a r c h c o m p r i s e d 6 6 6 f e c a l a n a l y s i s r e s u l t s f r o m p a t i e n t s t r e a t e d i n t h e l a b o r a t o r y d u r i n g t h e p e r i o d o f J a n u a r y t o D e c e m b e r 2 0 1 1 . T h e d a t a a n a l y s i s s h o w s t h a t o f t h e 6 6 6 s a m p l e s , 3 4 . 3 8 % w e r e p o s i t i v e f o r s o m e k i n d o f e n t e r o p a r a s i t e , 6 5 . 6 1 % a n d o t h e r s w e r e n e g a t i v e . A c c o r d i n g t o t h e p o s i t i v e r e s u l t s , 2 0 . 8 7 % o f t h e m w e r e i n f e c t e d b y p r o t o z o a a n d 1 7 . 4 2 % b y h e l m i n t h s , i t i s n o t e w o r t h y t h a t s o m e p a t i e n t s w e r e i n f e c t e d w i t h b o t h .
