Abstract
dc:description.abstractThis paper highlights the importance of accessibility in University Libraries and how it helps wheelchair users to have access to the wanted information. The present work analyses accessibility in the Biblioteca Setorial do CCSA which is the library that the Federal University of Paraíba offers to wheelchair users to have access to the available content and, also, to attend their locomotion needs and information barriers. Visits to the local are being used as data collection, observing if the furniture and offered services are prepared to receive a wheelchair user. There is also a reflection on how the term ―accessibility‖ had become one of the most discussed themes and how the physically disabled people, with great effort, has conquering their own space in society, willing, every day, to diminish the barriers and difficulties they find. Some concepts about University Libraries are presented, showing its relevance for the higher education institutions. The results allow us to notice that, even though some aspects are coherent with the norm – ABNT NBR 9050:2015, the CCSA library is not totally prepared to attend the needs of a wheelchair user, but, even so, a preoccupation is noticed in the aim to assist its users.
