dc:description.abstractFoods provide to us the nutrients and consequently the ener gy required maintenance of life. However, they can also be relevant in food poisoning cases, since it may present usually contaminated, and thus no changes in appearance or flavor, and consumers are not properly warned about the dangers. Food poisoning can be unleashed by bacteria, toxins, protozoa, and some chemical agents, inducing unbalance in the organisms homeostasis that is manifested through specific symptoms, which are often confused with other pathology. Based on the gradual increase in people whose are affected by food poisoning, This study aimed to collect data from the last seven years regarding notifications of confirmed cases of food poisoning in the count ry, comparing them between regions, analyzing the Paraíba state, and emphasizing the incidence in 1 - 4 years old children. One descriptive literature review was conducted with a quantitative, retrospective and critical approach, using the database Informati on System for Notifiable Diseases - SINAN - from Ministry of Health. The results presented a significant increase in the number of poisoning from 2007 to 2014, b esides indicating the Paraíba regions and cities with the largest number of occurrences and the state of Pernambuco highest prevalence of food poisoning in 1 - 4 years old children. Educational campaigns on care and handling of food on naturally toxic food, as well as guidelines rega rding the mild symptoms of foodborne illness , are key actions so tha t such cases are properly reported and recorded by public services. Clarification of the general population and monitoring of underreporting are measures that deserve effective application.
