Festa de verão em Salvador: um estudo antropológico a partir do acervo documental do jornal A Tarde

This thesis presents an analysis of the summer festivals that take place in Salvador, in the perspective that these events go beyond ephemeral features. Through this point of view, these celebrations, also called “de largo”, is part of the complexity of Salvador’s recognition as a festive city. This is the passage of those celebrations from the factual sphere to the theoretical sphere as suggested by Modern Anthropology, which deals with the festive concerns. Therefore, the interest of this research is the very dynamic of 13 summer holidays (São Nicodemus, Santa Bárbara, Nossa Senhora da Conceição, Santa Luzia, Bom Jesus dos Navegantes, Reis, Bonfim, Ribeira, São Lázaro, Pituba, Rio Vermelho, Itapuã and Lavagem de Ondina, which was extinct). These celebrations absorb and lose elements, benefits from the invisibility or visibility in larger and smaller scales in important segments of representation, such as the media channels. For that reason, to establish an analysis in such polysemic field as Festivals, I resorted to the collection of reports and images belonging to the Centro de Documentação do Jornal A Tarde (Cedoc). The periodical was founded in 1912 and is the oldest among the newspapers in circulation in the city. The survey in the collection resulted in a data consisting of 6.992 reports, aired in the period from 1912 to 2016, and 2.670 images. These information supported the analysis of the continuities and discontinuities in the festive atmosphere; the discourse nuances featuring Salvador as the “capital of happiness” and as “festive city” and Journalism identified as a place of memory. The results of this research enabled the development of an experimental website called Espelho de Festa and a detailed presentation of the dynamics shown in the events of the cycle.
