Abstract
dc:description.abstractExperimental study of an aerostatic radial foil bearing. A vertical shaft is supported axially by an air lubricated thrust bearing and radially by two foil bearings, each one made up of 3 segments of foils around the shaft, and tensioned by pulling rods. Compressed air is injected between the contact surfaces to obtain separation. Separation is measured as a function of the injected air pressure and the tension at the foils. The operation tests showed a stable performance from 2000 to 16200 rpm and total absense of contact between the foils and the shaft over 9300 rpm. Measurements of the stifness of the bearings showed values much lower than the stifness of the film of lubricant. A simple theorectical calculation of the main parameters of the bearing was made based on the conventional theory for rigid pads aerostatic bearings, showing good aproximation of experimental results.
