The Territorial Force in Staffordshire 1908-1915

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

This thesis investigates the Staffordshire County Territorial Force Association between the formation of the Territorial Force [TF] in 1908 and the end of direct enlistment to the TF in December 1915. It assesses the record of the Association in its efforts to recruit and retain soldiers for the Territorial Force. Particular attention is given to the attitudes of employers in the county towards the Force. The responses of the County Territorial Force Association to wartime recruiting conditions are also evaluated. The social background of officers and men recruited to the Territorial Force is examined. The findings from this case study are compared with previous research on the recruitment and social composition of Territorial Force units in other parts of the country to determine if Staffordshire followed the general pattern.
