A textual edition of the six poems in syllabic alexandrines from Robert Bridges' New Verse (1925).

This work is the first textual edition of any poems by the poet laureate Robert Bridges. It proffers an authoritative text of six poems which appeared together for the first time in the 1925 volume, New Verse, poems in which Bridges developed the syllabic alexandrine he would employ in writing his last and longest work, The Testament of Beauty. The edition divides into three basic parts. First, a textual introduction briefly touches on the critical reputation of Bridges since his death, lays out his gradual development of the syllabic prosody and twelve-syllable line, relates the history of the poems and their printing, and finally explains the editor's establishment of his copy-texts, his policy on accidentals, and his construction of the apparatus. Second comes the text itself, illuminated by a few footnotes. Then follows the apparatus, the most significant sections of which are the "Textual Notes," which discusses unusual features of the text and defends both the editor's emendations of the copy-texts and his abstentions from emendation; the "Historical Collation," which lists textual variants originating during the author's lifetime; and the "Alterations in the Manuscript," which records the textual changes the author made in the manuscript. Two appendices conclude the edition. The first lists variants in The Tapestry (1925), which includes an unauthoritative but nevertheless significant printing of the poems; the second lists the copies examined by the editor in his collation of the 1925 and 1926 printings of New Verse, and the variants between and internal to these two printings.
