Stories of reproductive technology and the search for discursive authority.

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

The development of reproductive technologies in response to infertility has been the source of much dispute among scientists, feminists, and other critics. Not only is the scientific community divided over the ethical considerations relating to these developments, but the legal community is searching for a way to reconcile scientific advances with the concerns of the public. Many solutions have been offered to resolve the crisis, but without a critical evaluation of scientific discourse. A feminist critique of scientific rhetoric is needed to expose the assumptions of scientists in their research and promotion of reproductive technology. Once such an evaluation is made, other discourses can be created which deconstruct these assumptions while providing other meanings associated with human reproduction. The field of legal discourse presents an opportunity to counter the power of scientific discourse by rejecting notions of objectivity and absolute truth and allowing multiple voices to be heard.
