A historical survey of repertory theatre in the United States and an analysis of current trends.

This thesis attempts to study repertory theatre in the United States, its brief and sporadic history and its current dilemma. In effect, this study attempts to understand the past and present problems of repertory theatre and by a brief look at working repertory theatres recognizes the interest in repertory which is prevalent across the United States. Chapter One reviews the background which has culminated in the repertory theatres of today. The following chapter reviews a variety of repertory companies in operation across the country. The final chapter scrutinizes the advantages and disadvantages artistically, culturally and financially which are inherent in repertory theatre. From this research, it has been concluded that despite the growing interest in repertory theatre, the serious problems present an almost insurmountable challenge to all. It is obvious that repertory is a worthwhile challenge, but a challenge to be undertaken only after careful consideration and preparation.
