A Sole for Nature: Communicating Nature Based Play Through the Design of Toddlers Footwear

Abstract

As children grow and learn, they are grasping how to navigate through their natural environment, and the shoes they wear should support that, not hinder it. This research aimed to engage parents to understand how a shoe could become a catalyst for encouraging children to engage in outdoor play and adventure. This was achieved using visual language tools such as semiotics and affordances through a communication framework, to design footwear for toddlers.
