Estimation of the Scale of Injury according to Severity

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to classify the severity of injury into death, hospitalization, and outpatient department, to grasp the current conditions of injury by estimating and pyramiding intention and the scale of injury mechanisms according to intention, and to find the characteristics of the pyramid according to injury mechanisms. METHOD: The current conditions of injury of each county were grasped by conducting complex sample frequency analysis on death, hospitalization, outpatient department according to gender, ages, occurrence season and intention, and injury mechanisms, using the Cause of Death Statistics data, 2011, from National Statistical Office (NSO), 2010 Korean National Hospital Discharge In-depth Injury Survey and the 2011 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey and the scales of injury occurrence were compared by calculating and pyramiding the percentage per 100,000 people of each county with regard to gender, ages and seasons according to intention and injury mechanisms. And the age-standardized ratio according to intention was calculated and pyramided. RESULT: As a result of grasping the scale of injury according to intention and injury mechanisms, it was confirmed that there were the characteristics of the scale of injury according to intention and injury mechanisms, and it was found that there were our country’s own characteristics of injury. And when unintentional injury was viewed in injury mechanisms, it was observed that the severity varied according to gender, ages, and seasons. CONCLUSION: This study is significant in that it estimated the scale of injury of the whole country by combining the data that have been currently being surveyed, and it attempted to estimate the scale of injury comprising not only death but also hospitalization and outpatient department. And if this study method is used continuously for follow-up researches, the patterns of injury can be grasped, so it can be utilized as preliminary data for practicing prevention programs related to injury.
