dc:description

OBJECTIVE: Recently, many studies have been conducted to reveal the effect of job satisfaction on health of workers. In Korea, studies on the correlation between job satisfaction and job stress and emotional labor have been introduced. However, there are still not enough study on job satisfaction and health issues in Korea. This study was aimed to identify the relationship between job satisfaction and work-related symptoms METHOD: This study utilized the first Working Conditions Survey(2006) conducted by the Occupational Safety and Health Research Institute of Korea Occupational Safety & Health Agency(KOSHA) on economically active population (aged between 15 and 64) from 16 cities/districts. The data was analyzed to review job satisfaction and examine job-related symptoms. Personal characteristics, working condition and environment, and work-related stress were adjusted. RESULT: It was found that low job satisfaction meant 1.37 times the risk (95%CI 1.11-1.70) of lumbar pain, 1.64 times the risk (95%CI 1.24-2.18) of stomachache, 1.40 times the risk (95%CI 1.14-1.72)of muscle pain, 1.46 times the risk(95%CI 1.14-1.87)of general fatigue, 1.60 times the risk (95%CI 1.17-2.18) of insomnia, 1.46 times the risk (95%CI 1.05-2.03) of anxiety, and 2.56 times the risk of (95%CI 1.78-3.68) depression, after adjusting Personal factors, working conditions, work-related stress DISCUSSION: The result of this study showed that the effect of working condition and working environment on job satisfaction is statistically significant. Significantly more job-related symptoms were observed in the group with low job satisfaction than in the group with high job satisfaction. Even after work-related stress was eliminated, the result was significant for some symptoms. Based on the findings of this study, it can be concluded that job satisfaction is related to personal health issues, and this can be used as a base for improving working conditions, environment, and job stress.
