Abstract

dc:description

This study was conducted aiming to use as basic data in relation to a nurseing profession and attitude toward death, by examining a nurseing profession and attitude toward death and surveying the relevant factors. In terms of data collection, it analyzed totally 130 persons targeting nurses who had ever experienced the dying patient among nurses working at the general wards, the intensive care units, and the emergency rooms for A university hospital where is located in Suwon-si, from July 12 to August 2 of 2004. In terms of a research tool about a nurseing profession, it measured by using the tool with 15 items of 4-mark scale by Yu Mun-suk, Yu Il-yeong and Lee Gyu-yeong(2002), which corrected and supplemented the tool translated by Yoo and others(1987) as for professional attitude scale by Fingerhurt, and in terms of a research tool about a nurse's attitude toward death, it measured by using the tool with 23 items of 4-mark scale, which was used after Park Seong-un(1992) translated the tool of inclination toward death by Thorson and Powell(1988). The data analysis included error, average, t-test, ANOVA, and Pearson's correlation coefficient, by using SPSS Program 11.0. The results of this study are as follows. 1. The level of targets' nursing profession showed the result of 3.47±.29 points at 4-mark scale. 2. The level of targets' attitude toward death indicated 58.63±8.14 of total marks at the maximum 92 marks. 3. The relationship between targets' nursing profession and attitude toward death showed significantly weak correlation(r=.185, p=.035). 4. As for the difference of nursing profession depending on targets' general characteristics, it was indicated that there is significant difference in the finally academic career(F=3.84, p=.02). In terms of academic career, the nursing profession was shown to be high in a case of more than a master's degree, and in the post-test that used Tuckey, there was significant difference between graduates from 3-year college and persons with more than a master's degree (F=3.86, p=.02). 5. As a result of analyzing the level of attitude toward death depending on targets' general characteristics, it was indicated that there is statistically significant difference in religion(F=2.92, p=.03). Namely, the attitude toward death was shown to be negative in nurses without religion compared to nurses with religion, and as a result of post-test, the statistically significant difference was shown in Christianity and non-religion(F=3.22, p=.02). In conclusion, a nurseing profession was shown to be positive, and the attitude toward death was surveyed to be in the middle level. Also, the nurseing profession and the attitude toward death showed correlation. In terms of the significant relationship between the nurseing profession and the attitude toward death, among general characteristics, what influences most was shown to be academic career and religion. Accordingly, in order to allow nurses to have positive inclination for the nurseing profession or for the attitude toward death, it needs to be educated along with considering each nurse's religion and academic career, and in a bid to be able to more correctly measure nurses attitude toward death, it is suggested the necessity of developing a tool targeting medical professionals.
